Build credit · Part 2 of 3
Choose a credit-building route
Which way to build credit fits your situation?
First decide whether you need a new product
Check whether an account you already have reports your payments. If it does, using it well may be enough; another account can add costs and another due date. If you still need a way to start, look at the cash required now, the payments you must keep up with, and what happens if you miss one.
The examples below show those tradeoffs for a secured card and a credit-builder loan. A secured card holds a deposit and lets you borrow against a limit. A builder loan holds the proceeds while you make fixed payments.
Compare the same cash-flow questions
Start with cash left after essential bills. For each product, ask: what cash is tied up at opening, what must leave my account each month, and what fees or interest might I pay? The sample answers the first two questions and estimates loan interest; it excludes product fees and card interest.
Card purchases are spending you must repay, not the card’s fee. Loan payments include principal that may come back after the term plus interest that does not. The dollar rows are a budget stress test, not a direct cost comparison. Change the numbers to see whether either fits.
Cash-flow example: two possible products
Both start with $800.00 after must-pay bills, before other spending. The card purchases below are optional spending; the loan payment is required. Do not rank the products by the leftover dollar amounts.
Secured card
$300.00 deposit · $50.00/mo purchases
- Cash tied up at opening
- $300.00
- Cash to reserve each month
- $50.00
- Opening month left
- $450.00
- Later months left
- $750.00
The deposit is held and may be returned under the card terms. Purchases are ordinary spending, not a fee; this example assumes the statement is paid in full. Reported utilization depends on timing.

$500.00 at 12% APR · 12 months
- Cash tied up at opening
- $0.00
- Cash to reserve each month
- $44.42
- Opening month left
- $755.58
- Later months left
- $755.58
Loan proceeds are held during repayment and released under the lender’s terms. Estimated total interest: $33.04.

Both estimates exclude product fees; card interest is excluded. A lender’s actual terms and reporting decide the real cost and benefit.
Choose only a commitment you can repeat
If the deposit drains bill money or a buffer, wait or seek a lower-deposit option. If a loan payment is uncertain, skip the loan. If an account you already have reports, you may need neither.
